fau|cet «F siht», noun. Especially U.S.
1. a device for turning on or off a flow of liquid from a pipe or a container holding it by opening or closing a valve; tap; spigot.
2. the enlarged end of a pipe into which the end of another pipe enters to form a joint.
[< Old French fausset, probably < fausser bore through; (originally) break < Late Latin falsāre corrupt, falsify < falsa false]
Usage Faucet is now the term in most general use in the United States. Spigot is still widely used, particularly in the South. Tap is chiefly British.
